The Northwest Region has adopted a unified dress code for enforcement at all Northwest Region area schools. This Northwest Region dress code is in compliance with the Clark County School District Regulation 5131. Among the changes in the new dress code policy is not allowing any head gear on campus. Previously, students were expected to take their head gear off as they arrived on campus. Far too much time was devoted to campus security and teachers getting students to comply with this expectation. Students will be directed to leave all head gear including hats, stocking caps, do-rags, etc. at home. Anyone wearing head gear to school will have the item confiscated and a parent or guardian will need to come to the deans’ office to retrieve the item. The new region dress code policy will also not allow any visible jewelry, studs, and other similar items which are attached by body piercing to areas other than the ears. Another region dress code change concerns hair color and style. Hair color and style must be in such a way as not to be disruptive to the educational environment; hair, if dyed, must be a natural color. Specific guidelines:
- Requires the wearing of shoes with hard soles. Closed shoes (no open-toed shoes or sandals) are required for all laboratory classes.
- Requires the wearing of shirts or blouses appropriately buttoned in accordance with the design of the shirt or blouse, and the length must extend beyond the belt level. No skin may be showing between the end of the blouse and belt level; this includes when arms are lifted.
- Requires that hems of short be no more than five inches above the knee. All pants, long or short, must be hemmed and without fraying and have no holes in them.
- Prohibits the wearing of transparent, see-through, bare-midriff, strapless, low-cut clothing with slits, or tops and outfits that provide minimum coverage. All straps must be three inches or greater in width and cover the shoulders.
- Prohibits students wearing sunglasses in the building.
- Prohibits the wearing of headgear on campus except for designated school-approved uniforms or at authorized athletic events.
- Prohibits the wearing of gloves, bandanas, do-rags, spiked or studded jewelry, chains, or any gang-related clothing.
- Prohibits slogans or advertising on clothing which, by their controversial or obscene nature, disrupts the educational setting. This includes any clothing which advertises tobacco, alcoholic beverages, drugs, racial bigotry, gang related items, or sexual activities.
- Pants must not sag nor may any pants be worn which allow shorts or underwear to be visible.
- Prohibits the wearing of clothing that is over-sized or baggy; excessively long shirts must be tucked inside pants.
- Prohibits the wearing of full-length, duster/trench coats; coats, gloves, and scarves must be removed upon entering of classrooms.
- Prohibits visible jewelry, studs, and other similar items which are attached by body piercing to areas other than the ears.
- Hair color and style must be in such a way as not to be disruptive to the educational environment; hair, if dyed, must be a natural color.
The school administration has the right to designate which types of dress or appearance that is not acceptable. Any student violating the dress code will be referred to the dean’s office for appropriate disciplinary action. If questions arise regarding this policy, you may contact the deans’ office at 799-4400 ext. 4500.
